About Lukomir Village
Lukomir is a true ethnological treasure, with origins tracing back to the Podveležje plateau above Mostar. Over time, semi-nomadic herders moved to the more hospitable environment of the canyon and eventually settled in what is now Lukomir.
The village is renowned for its distinct stone houses with cherry-wood shingle roofs. Access is limited during winter months, making summer the best time to visit. From the edge of the village, you’ll enjoy an unbeatable view of the dramatic Rakitnica Canyon and surrounding peaks.
Culture and Traditions
In Lukomir, women can still be seen wearing hand-knitted traditional garments, and knitting remains a living practice passed down through generations. This is one of the few places where modern technology hasn’t replaced time-honoured ways of life.
During the tour, you’ll have the chance to try delicious homemade Bosnian dishes and observe firsthand how life unfolds in this highland community - simple, resilient, and deeply rooted in tradition.
