Tour Plan
1. Sarajevo City Hall
The tour begins with a visit to Sarajevo City Hall, a stunning Austro-Hungarian-era building that was meant to host Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie. Your guide will explain why the Archduke’s visit to Sarajevo on June 28, 1914, was particularly controversial, given its significance as both the couple’s wedding anniversary and the anniversary of the Battle of Kosovo in 1389.
2. Latin Bridge and Sarajevo Museum
We proceed to the Latin Bridge, the site of the assassination. Here, you will hear the detailed account of the events that led to that fateful moment when Gavrilo Princip fired two shots that killed the Archduke and his wife.
The tour continues with a visit to the Sarajevo Museum, where exhibits provide further context about the political climate in Bosnia at the time, the role of the Black Hand and Young Bosnia, and the impact of the assassination on the world stage.
3. Appel Quay, Gavrilo Princip’s Chapel, and Hotel Austria & Bosna
Following the museum visit, the tour continues by car through Appel Quay, the route taken by the Archduke and his wife on the day of the assassination.
We will stop by the Chapel of Gavrilo Princip, where he and other members of the secret organisation were buried, and pass by Hotel Austria & Bosna, where the Archduke and Duchess stayed during their visit to Sarajevo.
4. Statue of Gavrilo Princip
The tour concludes with a visit to the statue of Gavrilo Princip located in East Sarajevo, part of the Republika Srpska region. Here, you will gain insight into how the legacy of Gavrilo Princip is perceived differently across Bosnia and the wider Balkans.
