Tour Plan
1. Old Orthodox Church
The tour begins with a visit to the Old Orthodox Church, one of Sarajevo’s oldest religious sites. Built with distinctive early Christian architectural features, the church is also home to a museum showcasing valuable medieval artefacts and goldsmithing works.
2. Baščaršija Square and Sebilj Fountain
Walk through the bustling Baščaršija Square, the oldest and most vibrant part of the city. Visit the Sebilj Fountain, a wooden structure known for its legendary water. Locals say that those who drink from the fountain will one day return to Sarajevo.
3. Gazi Husrev-bey’s Mosque and Clock Tower
Explore Gazi Husrev-bey’s Mosque, a stunning example of Ottoman architecture. Nearby, the historic Clock Tower shows lunar time, a unique feature that connects the city’s past with its present.
4. Sarajevo City Hall
Next, we head to Sarajevo City Hall, an iconic Austro-Hungarian building that once served as the National Library. It now stands as a symbol of Sarajevo’s resilience and cultural diversity.
5. Jewish Synagogue
Learn about Sarajevo’s Jewish community at the Old Jewish Temple, a museum that tells the story of the Jewish settlers who sought refuge in Sarajevo during the Ottoman era.
6. Meeting of Cultures Spot
Stand at the point where Sarajevo’s Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian architecture intersect, symbolising the city’s diverse cultural heritage.
7. Sacred Heart Cathedral and Pope John Paul II Statue
Discover the Sacred Heart Cathedral, the largest Catholic church in Sarajevo. Outside, the statue of Pope John Paul II commemorates his two visits to the city.
8. Hotel Europe and Viennese Café
Stroll past Hotel Europe, the city’s first modern hotel, and hear stories of the first waltz dance and famous guests who stayed here.
9. Latin Bridge and Assassination Spot
The tour concludes at the Latin Bridge, the site of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, an event that sparked the outbreak of World War I.
